General Data Protection Regulation is a compliance towards EU data protection. Since it’s effect from 05/25/2018, it gives an individual contributor, the control and right to protection of his/her data. Under the regulation, any company that does business with European citizens – regardless of their location at the time of interaction, are required to adhere to GDPR. This regulation applies to both automated data as well as manual filing systems. Non-compliance of GDPR can lead to a penalty of either 4% of annual global revenue or €20 million, whichever is greater.
The standard SAP ILM feature can take care of the data retention requirement. Under this feature, all policies are rules are defined along with the right to destruction of qualified data at the end of the retention period.
The blocking and deletion functions offered under SAP ILM can take care of the second requirement of “Right to be Forgotten”. This means that once the data has fulfilled its intended purpose, it can be deleted. In some cases, the data may be required for legal/compliance purposes and cannot be deleted. In such cases data is blocked and can be accessed only by an authorized person.
